In Jordan, about 80% of the Syrian refugees live in communities outside the refugee camps. For the hosting communities the increase of waste and the related collection pose huge challenges. Over 55% of Syrian refugees are settled in the northern governorates of Irbid and Mafraq. Municipal waste management systems are characterized by deteriorating collection systems.
The GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für internatinale Zusammenarbeit) is advising selected municipalities on solving their most urgent waste collection problems. Technical and managerial capacities are enhanced through trainings in order to improve the municipal collection services.
The municipal waste collecting is improved.
Repair, maintenance, operation and management capacities of the municipal waste vehicle fleet has improved.
The efficiency of the vehicle usage has increased.
Data and reports about the municipal waste situation respectively the collection are available for the management decisions and the budget planning in the municipalities.
